Purpose: This ledger maps the report's material claims to the sources used to support them. It records the design and population where the source makes them available, why the source is relevant, and the limitation that governs how the report may use it. It is an editorial audit trail, not a claim that every source is equally strong or directly about homeschooling.

## Evidence policy

The report uses four evidence tiers:

- **Tier 1: primary research.** Original observations, experiments, intervention studies, or official legal text.
- **Tier 2: synthesis research.** Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, umbrella reviews, and established conceptual syntheses.
- **Tier 3: professional or official guidance.** Government, clinical, or professional-body guidance. These sources describe policy or practice, not necessarily causal educational effects.
- **Tier 4: pro-homeschool synthesis.** Homeschool research or advocacy sources that are relevant to a family-facing conclusion but must be labeled for sponsorship, design, sample, or generalizability limits.

The most important guardrail is category separation. Research about schools, tutoring, cognitive psychology, health, or legal rules can inform a homeschool planning framework, but it does not automatically become direct evidence about homeschool outcomes.

## Source-level notes

### Greenwood and Stanley

The original article is the primary source for the population, setting, and opportunity-to-respond research question. The exact 400-minute, 250-minute, and 67.5-minute figures are handled as secondary-summary figures because the accessible HSLDA account is the source that presents the chain in the form commonly repeated in homeschool discussions. The report intentionally does not present those values as a national average or as a direct homeschool measurement.

### Duvall

The 2004 ERIC record provides unusually clear design and population information: four elementary students with ADHD, two male and two female, observed in homeschool and public-school contexts with MS-CISSAR and pre/post achievement measures. The report uses it to support a process claim about opportunity for engagement under a low student-to-adult ratio. The report does not use it to claim that homeschooling caused superior achievement or to prescribe a daily duration.

### Pro-homeschool research

The report includes HSLDA and Duvall because the topic cannot be discussed honestly without examining the research most often used by homeschool advocates. It also includes Ray's peer-reviewed review and Valiente and colleagues' broader review to make the evidence boundary visible. The editorial position is favorable to parents' ability to individualize education, not a claim that all homeschool outcomes are superior or that every family has equal resources.

### Legal sources

Legal pages were checked on 2026-08-12 and are included only to show why a global time rule is unsafe. They must be rechecked before any annual edition, family-facing state or country guide, or legal-compliance feature is published.

## Reuse and update protocol

For a future annual edition:

1. Recheck every legal source and update effective dates.
